Just to be honest, I have never had great skin. I have spent most of my teenage to adult life trying to find skin care products that would work for me. My skin care needs seemingly change so often that nothing really works well for a long period of time. Sometimes my skin is overly dry or overly oily. It can be dull and my pores too big. And, the most fun, is when it decides to break out. Plus, my skin is very sensitive, so trying new products can be kind of scary.
The Secret Weapon
When you find a product that addresses all those needs (without hurting sensitive skin), you might do a happy dance like I did! Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay is a mask that I discovered after doing some online research. The clay is 100% natural calcium bentonite which is known for absorbing negative toxins. Pollutants, makeup, dirt, and other toxins can cause our skin to not look its best, so this clay helps to remedy that.
How to Use Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay
To make the mask, you need the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay, raw and unfiltered apple cider vinegar, a non-metal stirring tool, scoop, and bowl. Make sure each item used is not metal! I bought the Aztec Clay Mask Set by Etana Beauty, and it included all of the supplies I needed to make my mask. It comes with a plastic stirring tool and scoop, and it comes with a wood-handled mask brush and bamboo bowl. It also includes 1 pound of the Indian Healing Clay and a 16 oz bottle of Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar. This mask set was much more simple for me than getting all of the items separately.
Directions are included with the kit, which comes in a nice bag to keep everything together. You start off putting one scoop of the clay powder in your bamboo bowl, then you add one scoop of the apple cider vinegar. It will immediately start bubbling at this point, so you will stir it until it has a smooth consistency. Then, you use the brush to apply it evenly to your face. Do not put it on the soft skin around your eyes, or I promise that you will regret it. I found that I could use a half scoop of both the clay and the ACV, and it was the perfect amount for my face. Plus, that makes my supplies last longer, and I don’t waste anything.
You then allow the mask to dry for 5-15 minutes. I wouldn’t recommend letting it stay on your skin any longer than that (especially if you have sensitive skin), because it can dry it out too much. During this time you can feel it tightening your skin and tingling, which is such an odd feeling! But, that’s how you know it’s working. By the time it’s dried, it will feel like you have tape pulling back your face. Use warm water to remove the mask when the time is up.
After the Mask
The brand I bought from recommends laying a cheesecloth over your drain while you wash off the mask. This helps to keep your pipes from getting clogged up by the clay. Since I didn’t buy that and don’t have that laying around at my house, I just used some paper towels (super fancy!).
You may look like you have a sunburn for a little while after taking the mask off. It also kind of feels like a sunburn, too. With that in mind, you may want to only use this mask at night or on a day that you don’t plan on going anywhere. The redness and sunburn feeling will go away after awhile (sometimes in an hour or two). The longer you keep the mask on, the longer the redness will stay on your skin.
However, you will also notice that your skin is MUCH smoother and your pores are not as noticeable. It also takes away that oily feeling when your skin produces too much oil. It really is an amazing product, and I highly recommend it!
As I mentioned before, do not put the mask on the soft skin around your eyes. I did that by accident once, and my skin stayed extremely red and tender there for several hours. It was pretty intense! Also, I only use this mask once a week since I have sensitive skin. Reviews on Amazon show people using it up to three times a week, but they may have less sensitive skin. This mask can also be used on your hair and other parts of your body that have large pores, acne, or are oily. It’s a great product to have, especially if you are going somewhere like the beach and want clear and clean skin!
